Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Driving Tour

Discover the beautiful landscapes of King’s Landing on the Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Driving Tour. Experience the real-world settings that bring the fantasy to life.

It is a well-known fact that the streets and buildings of Dubrovnik feature heavily throughout Game of Thrones. The city’s architecture and character have been instrumental in creating King’s Landing, as well as other locations mentioned in The Song of Ice and Fire. But, some of the most notable backdrops from the TV series are actually situated outside of the city’s walls.

Full description

The Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Driving Tour makes sure to visit them all.

While there are many walking tours of Dubrovnik, they all miss out on some of the most iconic filming locations in the area. By taking you where you can’t go by foot, the Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Driving Tour ensures that you get the full GOT experience!

Beginning in Pile Square, this tour is a 3-hour journey that celebrates not only GOT but the stunning beauty of the area too. As you travel between locations you’ll be treated to the awe-inspiring natural landscapes that make Dubrovnik such a desirable destination.

You’ll make a stop at the Trsteno botanical garden. Dating back to the 15th century, this is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. It has even managed to survive through a war of independence, and a forest fire that occurred due to drought. Many of the garden’s walkways appear throughout seasons 3 and 4 of GOT. We often see our favourite characters strolling along them inconspicuously, while in fact, they are plotting many secretive schemes.

Another breath-taking stop on this tour is Mount Srđ, which you can see looming over the city’s Old Town. The view from the top gives you a spectacular sight of the walled city below. This is the perfect place to capture some great photos of Dubrovnik from above. For the purposes of GOT, Srđ is the location of the Kingsroad leading into King’s Landing. Many scenes were filmed here, as characters approached the capital in triumph, or to face their impending doom.

The Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Driving Tour also stops at the Belvedere hotel.

The amphitheatre of this abandoned hotel is the setting for one of the most famous GOT scenes. Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, this was the arena for the fatal battle between Oberyn Sand and The Mountain. Hopefully, that encounter’s bloody end won’t spoil the effect of the stunning surroundings.

At the end of the trip, the Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Driving Tour will drop you back to Dubrovnik’s city centre, finishing off a memorable and unique experience.

Locations (4)

2. Trsteno Arboretum / King's Landing Gardens

The breathtaking Trsteno Arboretum is located North West of Dubrovnik. This is the filming location of the picturesque King’s Landing Gardens in season 3 and 4 of the Game of Thrones TV series.

King’s Landing Gardens is often referred to as Tyrell (High) Garden following the arrival of the family from the Reach. This location is featured when Sansa pays a visit to Lady Olenna Tyrell to discuss Margaery’s marriage to King Joffrey, and whether the wedding is such a good idea. Trsteno is used again when Oberon advises Cersei that he’ll send a present to Myrcella.

3. Mount Srđ / The Kingsroad

Dubrovnik’s Mount Srđ is located an impressive 415 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Dubrovnik coastline, the Elaphiti Islands as well as Lokrum. For Game of Thrones fans, the road leading up to Mount Srđ depicts The Kingsroad.

Although parts of the Kingsroad were filmed elsewhere, the filming location nearby Mount Srđ captured the moment when Bronn and Tyrion are awaiting the arrival of Oberyn into King’s landing.

4. Hotel Belvedere / The Mountain vs. the Red Viper

Located around two miles from old town Dubrovnik is the abandoned site of Hotel Belvedere. The once five-star hotel was originally a small amphitheatre situated close by the sea. The pathway that leads to Hotel Belvedere offers some breathtaking views. Unfortunately, entry into the hotel is no longer possible due to safety reasons.

We see the arena used during season four – The Mountain and the Viper – following the prosecution of Tyrion Lannister for the murder of King Joffrey. A trial by combat is set up to determine Tyrion’s fate which plots Oberyn Martell (The Red Viper) against Gregor Clegane (The Mountain).
