Private Wellington Lord of the Rings 2-Day – Day 1
The Private Wellington Lord of the Rings 2-Day tour begins once our groups are united with their private tour guide in a central Wellington location. We’ll set off for a long drive in your private transport, taking groups through picturesque countryside and scenery. Although the trip may take some time to arrive at Putangirua Pinnacles, there are plenty of scenes to take in along the way. During the journey, this is an excellent opportunity for you to ask any of those burning Lord of the Rings questions you may have for your tour guider. Likewise, your private guide will point out any significant points of interest and share LOTR facts along the way.
Once you arrive at the Putangirua Pinnacles, you will embark on a hike which will involve some serious walking. Appropriate footwear is essential to make the most of your experience. The Putangirua Pinnacles were used in the Return of the King, doubling as the Dimholt Road. At this point, you are walking the in the footsteps of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli as they headed for the Paths of the Dead. As groups progress through the paths, the location gets more and more recognisable, and we remember Tolkien’s army appearing in during the movie.
The hike takes around an hour to enter the deeper parts of the Pinnacles, and once we reach this point, we’ll trackback to our transport in preparation for day 2 of the tour.
Private Wellington Lord of the Rings 2-Day tour – Day 2
Day 2 of the Private Wellington Lord of the Rings 2-Day Tour begins with a pickup from a central city location, taking you on a drive offering fantastic viewpoints of Wellington City and the Harbour. Upon arrival in a pine forest where the movies were first filmed, you will explore scenes such as the Buckleberry Ferry, the Shortcut to the Mushrooms, and the memorable Get off the Road scene when the Black Riders pursued the Hobbits.
You’ll experience where The Lord of the Rings trilogies were brought to life at the Wellington film industry in Miramar. Witness spectacular weapon and armour displays from the movies at Weta, purchase a souvenir and watch behind the scenes footage detailing the Weta company’s history. At no extra cost, you might like to experience the Windows into Workshop tour.
Nearby Mount Victoria is where we find the Embassy Cinema, which hosted the world premiere of the Return of the King and An Unexpected Journey. Also located in Miramar is the famous Roxy Cinema, which we’ll get to see as we progress further into the tour.
The afternoon starts with a complimentary lunch at the Scorch-O-Rama beachside cafe. After lunch, your tour will venture out of the city to explore other Lord of the Rings filming locations. Experience scenes along the Hutt River as the location for the Great River Anduin, moving towards Amon Hen. We’ll visit Isengard, exploring essential scenes from The Hobbit movies, including where the Lothlorien Forest scenes were captured. Guests will also have a great viewpoint of The Misty Mountains and the 12 Mile Delta where Ithilien was set.
The next stop will be a visit to the iconic Gardens of Isengard before embarking along Highway 2 to Kaitoke Regional Park. Kaitoke was the filming location featuring a breathtaking rain forest which is Rivendell in the movies. We now embark along the routes that Arwen and Elrond walked in the film.
The Private Wellington Lord of the Rings Full-Day Tour draws to a close after returning to your pickup location, providing one last opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the filming locations. As you head back to the city, you will also get a fantastic viewpoint of Helm’s Deep and Minas Tirith as you pass the quarry where the scenes were filmed. It was also here that Brego saved Aragon’s life after he fell into the river, carrying Aragon back to safety to helm’s Deep before Saruman’s army arrived.
