South Boston | On Location
Known by the locals as “Southie”, South Boston is the largest Irish neighborhood in the city. The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, which begins in South Boston, is the second biggest parade in the world.
It’s no wonder professionals in the entertainment industry often choose locations in South Boston when film scouting for Irish-American movies. Movies filmed in this area include The Town, Southie, The Verdict, Mystic River, The Departed and Gone Baby Gone. One of the most popular Southie filming locations is the L Street Tavern, which was used as Matt Damon’s and Ben Affleck’s hometown pub in Good Will Hunting.
The tour will also take you to the South Boston Waterfront, formerly known as the Seaport District, which is home to the Boston Convention Center seen in the movie 21. Other films shot in this neighborhood include The Departed, The Game Plan and Next Stop Wonderland.
Jack Nicholson’s ruthless mobster role in The Departed was modeled after real-life mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, who was arraigned at the Moakley Courthouse located in the South Boston Waterfront.
